The Client: Manor Collection
Manor Collection is a small group of independently operated and individually styled hotels, with 100 bedrooms across the collection in the South East of England. They strive to offer high levels of service to clients who use their conference facilities, function rooms, hold their dream wedding or special celebrations.
The problem
We started working with this hotel group, Manor Collection, a few years ago to support their ongoing concerns with stress and burnout with their hospitality staff. This industry faced unprecedented challenges during the pandemic and many staff were isolated during this time and faced financial challenges. The hotel group has a total of 123 employees across both the hotels, which are situated in Surrey.
With a priority focus on customer satisfaction and staff wellbeing, they are renowned as an employer of excellence with a high commitment to their staff. Specific problems faced by their staff included managing work-life balance as a result of shift work; dealing with customers and customer service issues; presenteeism and job fatigue; interpersonal and cultural communication issues; dealing with uncertainty, anxiety and depression.
Our solution
Our initial consultation with head office focused on shifting their mindset from reactive and hindsight interventions, to thinking about what they can put into place to pre-empt the needs of their staff and be proactive in their approach. We initiated a series of mental health training sessions where selected team members and managers from across the different hotel sites participated in certified mental health training that would equip them with the skills to notice, manage and support staff experiencing difficulties.
The outcome
This initial intervention was a great success as staff felt equipped to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill health but more importantly had the communication tools and confidence to approach someone and offer support. On the back of the success of the initial training, a plan was developed to roll out further training across all departments to ensure a diverse group of staff were trained as Mental Health Champions and First Aiders to support their peers.
Over a 12 month period, a total of 14 employees have been certified with MHFA England and now fulfil the roles of champions or first aiders for the hotel group. Not only has this benefitted the group and colleagues of the individuals, but it has also improved staff morale and connection on a broader scale. Awareness has increased and stigma has been reduced with more open conversations taking place. Mental Health training has the contingency benefit of improved wellbeing and awareness in home and personal lives and developing a culture of care where staff feel valued and this has a direct impact on staff retention and job satisfaction. It is great to observe that most of the staff who completed the training are still in continued employment and our staff retention has improved which has reduced our recruitment cost by 4%)
The Manor Collection’s approach to mental health has been a resounding success and their commitment to continued training and support shows staff that their wellbeing is a priority. They are pioneers in championing mental health in the hospitality industry.
Feedback from Vikas Shrivastava, Hotel Manager, who has experienced change and improvements in the teams following the rollout of mental health training:
‘The MHFA course was a real eye- opener and lot to learn and implement in the work place to ensure our employees have better mental health. I will highly recommend Ase and Jenni for their exceptional teaching skills and the efforts they both put in people’s learning.’
